Long Term and Hospice Care

At Saving Harbin Dogs, we make every effort to find the best home for the disabled and special needs dogs in our care. Despite best efforts, that is not always possible.

These SHD foster dogs require long term care. Some of the dogs that come to us have been abused or neglected, and others are injured or suffer chronic illnesses. Some may be older dogs in need of medical or lifelong hospice care. These are the most vulnerable ones. Sadly, some may never be adopted. Please help us to care for all special needs dogs, so we can continue to give them all the medical care and attention they need. Rachel

Rachel has a brain injury which has left her permanently disabled. Our medical team has concluded that there is nothing that can be done for her condition except supportive care. She does not seem to be in any pain. She is actually much stronger now than when we first rescued her. She has a good appetite and will complain if she gets served the same meal twice in a row. Rachel is in a foster hospice home surrounded by people who love and care for her, and we will continue to provide long term care and support. She is one of our permanent foster dogs.

Fantine

Our sweet little Fantine has an enlarged heart and pulmonary edema. She’s a senior girl, estimated to be about 10 years old. She is being treated by our vet team and is receiving love and care in a foster home. She’s sweet and friendly. She loves her treats and will dance for them. We are doing everything we can for her. For the moment she is doing okay, but we also understand that her condition is serious and life threatening. It is unlikely, but unknown at this time if Fantine will ever be able to travel. She may be an SHD forever foster. We are here for her for as long as she needs to stay.

Sophie

Sweet Sophie was alone and starving on the streets of Harbin. Found near a local restaurant living on scraps. We rushed her to our vet hospital for assessment and treatment. She was severely emaciated and anemic. Her overall condition was poor. She was treated and released and is in foster care. She is stable at the moment, but she is medically fragile and not strong enough to travel. She is prone to rapid health decline and has required hospitalization several times to stabilize her. We will do everything possible to keep her comfortable and give her a happy life. Sophie is one of our long term care foster hospice dogs.

Weston

Weston is the oldest dog in our care. He has many health issues, including global hypertrophy, liver disease, lumbar spine spurs, disc stenosis, and hypertrophy of the prostate. He is being treated by our vet team and is receiving love and care in a foster home. He is a super sweet pup with a quirky personality. We are doing everything we can to make sure his life is as good as it can be.

Oscar

Our senior Schnauzer, Oscar, was used for breeding his whole life, and when he was no longer useful the breeder discarded him like trash. When we rescued him he was emaciated and severely anemic. We didn't think he would survive. But he showed us that he is a fighter and got stronger every day. Oscar had to have a dental surgery. Most of his teeth were rotten and needed to be extracted. In spite of everything he has been through, he is a sweet boy. He is receiving love and care in foster care. His options for adoption are limited. He will stay with us as long as needed.
